The following programs are available in the Bluffton, Beaufort, Hilton Head area for schools and other groups and organizations and can be conducted either at your site or by special permission at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn.
Meet Joan Peirce: An interactive and thought-provoking program that will bring the early years of the Jamestown settlement to life in your classroom.4th Grade and older (9-18 years):
Joan Peirce, a 20 year resident of the colony of Virginia, is in London in 1629.Can she persuade your students (posing as the poor, homeless children of London) to sign on as indentured servants and immigrate to Virginia?
Program is divided into two parts: 30-minute Living History presentation followed by a 30-minute “modern-day” session that offers a comparison between the beginning of the Virginia colony and the beginning of what would become the colony of South Carolina.
Cost: $5.00 per student
Lessons with Mary Hext: Explore education for young ladies in the 18th century. 4th Grade and older (9-18 years):
Mistress of a Boarding School for young ladies in Charleston in the 1740’s, Mistress Hext will give lessons in deportment, handwriting, and English country dancing. Each participant will make a linen or “sweet” bag.
Program length: one hour

Life in Colonial Times: K-3rd Grade (5-8 years):
Costumed presenter will explore life in colonial South Carolina with students using pictures and reproduction artifacts.Children will have the opportunity to play colonial games and make an authentic 18th century headache sack.

Cost: $6.00 per student
Medicine in Colonial Times: 4th-6th Grade (9-12 years):
Costumed presenter will explore life and medical care in colonial South Carolina with students using pictures and reproduction artifacts.Students will analyze the treatment given to George Washington during his final illness and make an authentic 18th century headache sack.
Program length: one hour
Cost: $6.00 per student
